Catalysing  Lesotho’s Sustainable Economic Future

HMKLIII Just Energy Transition Limited

Who wE ARE

With the blessing and endorsement of His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, the HMKLIII Just Energy Transition (JET) Fund aims to make Lesotho the first carbon-neutral country in Africa.

To achieve this, the fund seeks to build a sustainable economy based on renewable energy, water security, and the sale of clean energy to South African mines. It is committed to ensuring a true Just Energy Transition by channeling the economic returns from the HMKLIII JET Fund's investments in Lesotho’s renewable energy projects into social development and landscape rehabilitation initiatives.

The fund will contribute to meaningful climate change mitigation and adaptation through: advancing Lesotho’s efforts to exceed its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement on Carbon Neutrality; establishing a 100% renewable energy sector that supports the Renoka program for the protection of the Maluti wetlands and rangelands; and diversifying Basotho incomes through a shift away from declining remittances from mineworkers and reliance on South African power.

A Timely Opportunity

The HMKLIII project is currently seeking catalytic funding to launch this project

Opportunities to completely redirect a country’s economic trajectory with a single, cohesive program are rare. We have such an opportunity with Lesotho’s HMKLIII Renewable Energy Programme. There is a narrow window of opportunity created by the South African power crisis. If we miss this chance, it is unlikely we will get a second one
